What does updating my video card drivers do?

i have an nvidia... and of course i update them... but i was just wondering what updating graphic card drivers do?

God bless all and ty|||the drivers is what tells it how to do what basicly

newer drivers are updated with better performance in some games, better support, fixing buggs for some cards, better support for SLI and similar, basicly (if they fix a game you play that is) free fps (frames per sec)|||To a computer everything needs to be broken down into electrical signals (1s and 0s). A driver is a program that describes what a particular device can do and lists how the computer can communicate with that device. Without a driver, the computer wouldn't be able to use it at all.

Driver updates are released when the hardware manufacturer finds a problem with the driver. A graphics card is an incredibly complex piece of hardware- it's basically a several hundred-core computer by itself. So every now and again, people notice a problem that only appears under specific circumstances (usually it's something that a game developer does, not that you do). So updates will be released to fix that problem.|||What J S said.

Rarely, but not unknown, driver updates can introduce new problems or crashes that didn't exist before. That's where system restore, and it's ability to revert to previous versions, comes in handy.
